Melbourne Dental School Internal Grants

As a student at the Melbourne Dental School, you can look forward to studying in Australia's top school for everything relating to dentistry, oral health, and dental research.

The School offers internal grants to all cohorts for various research projects. Funds granted will be paid on reimbursement of invoices submitted to the School Office.

In order to obtain funding, students, together with their academic research supervisors, must submit a research funds application form and budget form. Supervisors must check budgets completed by their students in accordance with the conditions of the grant below. Research Grant Information

  • Postgraduate & Honours Research Grants

    Eligibility

    This grant is available to students currently enrolled in:

    • Doctor of Philosophy
    • Master of Philosophy
    • Doctor of Clinical Dentistry
    • Honours (All programs)

    Grant Amount

    The award amount for each individual course is presented below and applies to the period of candidature*:

    • Doctor of Philosophy: $2600
    • Master of Philosophy: $1600
    • Doctor of Clinical Dentistry: $2000
    • Honours (All programs): $1400

    *Please note if you request for external statistical support, you are entitled to request for an additional grant amount (see additional amount available for each individual course):

    • Doctor of Philosophy: $1000
    • Master of Philosophy: $600
    • Doctor of Clinical Dentistry: $700
    • Honours (All programs): $600

    Any requests for external statistical support should be outlined in your application. Retrospective claims for statistical services already provided will not be reimbursed.

    Application Open Date:

    Application Information:

    The application form and project details must be filled in electronically. The Budget Form (available below), must be uploaded in the application form, checked and signed by the applicant(s)'s supervisor.

    All students associated with a research project that requires Ethics Approval must undertake Research Integrity Online Training: RIOT training .The completion certificate for this training must be forwarded to mds-researchsupport@unimelb.edu.au

    Applications must explain the aim of the project and include an itemized budget with justification of items being requested. It is the student's responsibility to ensure full details and itemized responses are provided where necessary.

    Please consider your project costs carefully and apply for funding in advance. There will be NO retrospective funding. Additionally, some expenses cannot be claimed. For information on what you can claim, see research funds policy.

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) Research Grants

    Eligibility

    This grant is available to students currently enrolled in the Doctor of Dental Surgery.

    Grant Amount

    $3000 per Student Group.

    Application Open Date:

    Monday 26th August 2024 (Eligible students will be notified via CANVAS when applications are open).

    Application Close Date:

    Friday 20th September 2024. Late Applications will not be accepted.

    Outcomes:

    You will receive an email notifying you of the outcome of your application, by the 18th October 2024.

    NOTE: if you have submitted an incompleted application, this will cause further delays.

    Application Information:

    Additional Information:

    Student groups may apply for the entire grant amount to be spent during the 2nd or 3rd year of the DDS course. Alternatively, if student groups do not apply for the full $3000 in their first application, they may apply for the remainder of their eligible project funding in subsequent funding rounds during their candidature.

    Conditions of Grant:

    1. Funds are available to students for expenses such as small equipment and consumables. Some expenses cannot be claimed. For information on what you can claim, see research funds policy
    2. Your application must include:
      1. Details of the project, methodology and all relevant documentation (e.g. questionnaire).
      2. Details and a breakdown of estimated costs to be incurred. You must provide details and costing for every budget item. Requests for 'miscellaneous' expenses will not be approved.
      3. Ethics approval (if applicable). If ethics approval is required, funding will not be released until ethics approval is
        obtained.
    3. Your supervisor must sign the application.
    4. Funds will be allocated to the supervising academic. Cash will not be paid. All costs in excess of the award are the
      responsibility of the supervising academic.
    5. Incomplete, sub-standard or late applications will be rejected.
    6. Student groups requiring statistical assistance should contact their supervisor/s before seeking funding for any external consultation.
    7. DDS research funding does not include travel. Student groups seeking travel funding (for one member of the
      group to present the research at a conference) should apply for the Student Travel Award.

Submitting the Application

All applications must be accompanied by a Budget Form that must be completed and signed by your supervisor.

Doctor of Dental Surgery students must submit their application via the Online DDS Application Form.

Postgraduate and Honours students must submit their application via the Online Postgraduate and Honours Grant Application Form.
