Welcome to Melbourne Dental School
The University of Melbourne is recognised internationally as a leader in graduate research training. As one of our researchers, you will be working with leading experts in the Dentistry field in first rate facilities such as the Melbourne Dental Clinic.
In collaboration with Industry partners and The Melbourne Dental School offers a range of grants, awards and scholarships which support students’ research projects and post graduate studies. Research degrees allow students to study a specific subject area in great depth through sustained, independent enquiry, carried out under the supervision of research staff of the faculty. Assessment is based on a written thesis and varies in length according to the degree program. Melbourne Dental School students can access funding support for their research projects via Internal and External grants and schemes spanning the Oral Health and Dental field. Each area of funding support will have their own criteria for assessing eligibility and suitability, according to the nature of research or cohort.

External Research Grants
External Research Grants are made available to Melbourne Dental School students by organisations with an interest in promoting Oral Health and Dental research within Australia. The application process is wholly facilitated by the respective organisation and must be applied for directly via their channels. All enquiries should also be directed to the funding body to ensure the most accurate information is received.

Internal Research Grants
Melbourne Dental School offers internal grants to all cohorts for various curriculum related research projects. These grants are applied for via the School’s Research Committee and the funds are provided for the purposes of facilitating research related expenses. Each applicant/s will need to ensure they have the support and guidance of their research supervisor.

Awards/Prizes
Melbourne Dental School awards and prizes recognise our students and researchers in the areas of excellence. Most of our awards are supported by trust funds established by generous benefactors, industry partners, and supporters through donations and sponsorships.
Awards supporting enrichment activities such as research or travel are by application, however prizes are often award to students who satisfy specific requirements of eligibility (e.g. getting the top mark within a subject, etc.).

Scholarships
The University of Melbourne offers a wide range of scholarships and is one of the most generous and comprehensive Scholarship Programs in Australia. It rewards the outstanding academic achievement of students and is committed to providing opportunities to those who may otherwise be excluded from university study due to socio-economic, cultural, geographic and other disadvantages.

The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry Minor Thesis comprises the completion of a body of original research written up in a thesis format. The DCD Minor Thesis must ideally be completed within three years full-time study (including four consecutive semesters enrolled in a thesis subject during 2nd and 3rd years study).

Welcome to Melbourne Dental School
As a Melbourne Dental School student, you are responsible for maintaining administrative requirements throughout your studies including the timely submission of forms, reimbursement applications and keeping the school informed of any absences as part of your course requirements.
The range of forms available below are specific to Melbourne Dental School students for administrative requirements throughout the student life cycle. Students are encouraged to utilise these online facilities for efficient and accessible processing of financial and administrative applications.

Applications

The following forms are available for students to submit online in order to notify the School of any absences from course requirements in a timely manner. Graduate students must also complete key card and proxy form requests in order to access laboratories and other areas within the Royal Dental Hospital which are applicable to their research and course requirements.

Absence Notification
Due to the attendance hurdle requirements for all subjects, it is important for students to notify the School of any and all absences. Please note that applying for any leave or supplying any absence documentation after an absence does not guarantee approval. The Hurdle Absence Notification and Document Submission (HANDS) form is for unplanned absences only from a curriculum activity scheduled on the day student is unable to attend.
Students who are unable to attend classes due to extenuating circumstances can notify the School by submitting the HANDS form via link below.

Absence Application
Students who wish to apply for a pre-approved absence for a future date (up to 10 days) may use the Pre-Approved Short Term Leave (PASTel form) below. All applications must be approved by the Year Coordinator. If there are any assessments held or due during the period requested, or if leave is longer than 10 days, a student will need to meet the requirements for Special Consideration.

Special Consideration
For students who experience extraordinary or unusual circumstances, or ongoing circumstances that may adversely affect academic performance can apply for Special Conisderation. Please see link below for further information and application links.

Leave of Absence
The Leave of Absence form is only to be submitted for semester or year length absence applications. A student may be declined a Leave of Absence due to the structural nature of the course, or if the application reason is not demed to be extenuating circumstances. Please see below link for further information.

Building Access
The Melbourne Dental School operates from three locations, Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, Melbourne Oral Health Training and Education Centre (MOHTEC) and Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute. Students will be granted access via proxy cards to study areas and laboratories according to their course requirements on completion of enrolment.
Graduate students are required to individually apply for building access to laboratories, study areas and other core facilities via submission of below form.

The following forms are available for students to apply for financial reimbursements resulting from any travel or purchases made as part of their course requirements. In the case of purchase requisitions, forms require the relevant Account codes and Approval signatures.

Payments to Students
For students who are submitting a request for reimbursement for university expenses incurred and paid by the student. When submitting a request for reimbursement or submission for a prize or award to be paid into personal bank account, students need to complete the following form

Purchase Requisitions
For students that require the purchase of materials for research projects or curriculum related activities need to submit a purchase requisition form to the Melbourne Dental School Office.The form requires the correct Account code from which the funds are being accessed and must also be approved by the students’ Supervisor.

Locker Reimbursement
For students who have completed their studies or are withdrawing from their course, please complete form via link below and submit online to receive a refund of your locker deposit which was paid at course commencement.

Student Travel Reimbursement
For students to apply for travel reimbursements if they have attended Rural Placements or are On Call to urban clinics. It does not apply to students attending Urban Placements.The travel allowance for own-vehicle use is only available to one student who is the driver or owner of the vehicle. Students who return to Melbourne for any interim period during the course of a rural placement do so at their own cost.

General Forms

The following forms are available for students to action their general Administrative requirements as needed throughout their course. Students must complete a First Aid certificate within the first four weeks of Semester 1 and submit details via link below.

Room Bookings
For students who wish to book the Common Room located within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne on the ground floor. The Common Room can be utilised for student functions and activities with approval from the Melbourne Dental School Office. Final authorisation is given by RHDM Manager Facilities. Please see Terms and Conditions of Use as listed on form.

Student Rural Placement
For students who are applying for Rural Placement Rotations to Shepparton, Morwell or Moe. It does not apply to students attending Urban Placements.

First Aid
In addition to the General Clinical Placement Requirements, all students must obtain and submit an appropriate First Aid Certificate within the first 4 weeks of Semester 1. Acceptable Australian First Aid courses must be HLTAID003 Provide First Aid or equivalent. Overseas First Aid training will be accepted if the course contains First Aid with CPR.
