Award: 2024 Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) academic Prize
In recognition of: final-year dental students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.
Dr Brandon Lim
Award: 2025 Dr. William R. Proffit Resident Scholar Award – first prize for the Clinical research stream at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Annual Session
In recognition of: research into the three-dimensional stability of mandibular advancement surgery using virtual surgical planning.
Dr Denice Loo (DCD 2024)
Award: 2025 Athanasios E. Athanasiou Master’s Thesis Award at the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO). This prestigious award comes to the Orthodontics team of the University of Melbourne for the 4th time in 3 years.
In recognition of: A pilot case-control study of bone- and tooth-borne maxillary protraction with miniscrews and Class III elastics.
Professor Michael McCullough (BDSc 1982, PhD 1995)
Award: 2024 Alan Docking IADR Science Award (International Association for Dental Research)
In recognition of: distinguished dental research based on outstanding scientific achievement. At the time of receiving the award in 2024, he had published 218 articles, five book chapters, two books, supervised 23 research higher degree students to completion, and was supervising 9 PhD students.
Dr Stephanie Shields (DCD 2013)
Award: 2025 IADR Paediatric Oral Health Research Young Investigator Award
In recognition of: her study ‘Inflammation and Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation: A Population-Based Cohort Study’.
Professor Alastair J Sloan – former Head of School / current Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research Collaboration
Award: 2024 Edward Leo Sheridan Medal, awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Faculty’s Annual Scientific Meeting
In recognition of: significant contributions to the medical and dental communities. Professor Sloan, the only Australian recipient of this distinguished medal, presented his lecture on “3D Tissue Models and Novel Approaches for Dental Tissue Infection Management and Repair”.
Associate Professor Leanne Teoh (BDSc 2008, PhD 2021)
Award: 2024 IADR ANZ Division Investigator Award in Preventative and Community Dentistry (International Association for Dental Research)
In recognition of: excellence in early-career research on antimicrobial prescribing practices for oral and dental conditions in both private and public Australian hospitals from 2013 to 2022, demonstrating for the first time, the appropriateness and guideline concordance of antimicrobials prescribed in these settings.
