Associate Professor Catherine Butler Receives Melbourne Dental School Strategic Grants for Outstanding Women 2023

The Melbourne Dental School is thrilled to announce Associate Professor Catherine Butler as a distinguished recipient of the Strategic Grants for Outstanding Women, recognising her outstanding academic endeavours and potential for future career advancements.

Associate Professor Catherine Butler is a lead researcher examining the oral microbiome at the Melbourne Dental School. Her research and expertise explore oral diseases such as early childhood caries and periodontitis, as well as the role that oral bacteria play in Alzheimer’s disease which is currently supported by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).

About the scheme

Launched in 2019, the Strategic Grants for Outstanding Women scheme (SGOW) aims to support high-performing early and mid-career women in academia in advancing their careers towards senior academic and leadership roles.

Offered biennially, the scheme supports recipients over a two year period to undertake activities intended to increase their academic capability, productivity and profile with the intention of progressing their careers.

How the Grant Will Be Used

The Strategic Grant for Outstanding Women will support Associate Professor Butler to attend the IDSA conference IDWeek 2024 in the USA, where she will participate in specialist workshops for researchers examining a microbial aetiology for Alzheimer’s disease. This opportunity will enable her to establish new, and build on current, international collaborations in this field, furthering the continued expansion of her research and resulting in high impact publications.
