Melbourne Dental School's Oral Medicine & Oral Cancer Group highly represented at the 9th World Congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology

The Melbourne Dental School's OMOC led the largest Australian delegation at the 9th World Congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology in Korea.

The Melbourne Dental School's Oral Medicine and Oral Cancer Group (OMOC) represented the largest Australian contingency at the recent 9th World Congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology in Incheon, Korea, themed "Moving forward next generation health care."

Dr. Tami Yap, A/Prof. Antonio Celentano and Prof. Michael McCullough were invited speakers in the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia Symposium. Dr. Tami Yap spoke about  'Digital Mouth Mapping in Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders,' showcasing recent advancements in in vivo microscopy and the development of the MouthMap(TM) software. A/Prof. Antonio Celentano presented his research on the impact of anticoagulants in the therapeutic response of oral squamous cell carcinoma, while Prof. Michael McCullough highlighted the OMOC's work in microRNAs in oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders over the last decade.

Additionally, three MDS-OMOC PhD candidates contributed to the conference through oral presentations. Dr. Rishi Ramani presented his developed AI for analyzing in vivo micrographic images, Dr. Neha Pruthi discussed machine learning for cancer detection using microRNAs from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue, and Dr. Nadia Kaunein presented her work on microRNAs in non-smoking, non-drinking oral cancers. Dr. Ivy Tan, a DCD-Oral Medicine candidate, showcased a poster on dose optimization in the application of topical fluorescent agents used with in vivo microscopy.

The congress provided an excellent opportunity for us to connect with international collaborators and establish new alliances.
