Inaugural Marina and Alexis Keskevich Scholarship recipient announced

On Tuesday 1 May, the Melbourne Dental School was pleased to hold an afternoon tea celebration to announce the inaugural recipient of the Marina and Alexis Keskevich Scholarship.

Madeleine Allan, Dr Marina Keskevich and Professor Mike Morgan

Hosted by Head of School Professor Mike Morgan, the event was a wonderful opportunity to thank Dr Keskevich for her generous support and to introduce her to the inaugural recipient, Madeleine Allan.

Established by Dr Keskevich in 2017, this scholarship provides important financial support to students enrolled in the Doctor of Dental Surgery who are from a rural or regional location.

Dr Marina Keskevich (née Petunin) graduated with Honours in Dentistry from the University of Sydney in 1958. After marrying Dr Alexis Keskevich in London in 1959, they relocated to Sunbury, where they would reside for 55 years. Alexis was the primary GP serving a large district with over 2,500 people for 12 of those years, while Marina was the resident dentist serving patients with severe mental health issues and intellectual disabilities. Both Marina and Alexis were highly respected healthcare providers, and particularly essential in serving the Russian community in Melbourne. Their work has addressed the needs of some of the most vulnerable members of society, for which they received a Meritorious Service to the Community Award in 2013.

Madeleine Allan holds a degree in Biomedical Sciences from La Trobe University and is currently undertaking the Doctor of Dental Surgery at the Melbourne Dental School.

“This scholarship will release some of the pressure that my family and I are under to pay my tuition fees up front for the next four years, which we are very grateful for. The money will also help to pay for all the tools and equipment that have to be purchased as part of the course.

“Having the help of the scholarship will hopefully mean that I won't have to miss out on cohort and course events and therefore will give me every opportunity to get involved with my peers and feel like I belong. I am very grateful to have been selected as the recipient of this scholarship and I will endeavour to make the donor proud.”
